    Professional Background

Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist | Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Central Florida

Dr. Naushad Shaik is a cardiac electrophysiologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex heart rhythm disorders. Since joining Cardiovascular Associates of Central Florida in 2009, he has developed an advanced electrophysiology practice encompassing complex catheter ablation, atrial fibrillation treatment, ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias, pacemakers and defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and left atrial appendage closure devices such as the Watchman device.

Dr. Shaik is particularly experienced in complex cardiac ablation. He is the first to bring and pioneer the use PFA (Pulsed Field Ablation) in Orlando. He treats patients with atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter as well as supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, using sophisticated cardiac mapping and ablation technologies to identify and treat abnormal electrical pathways within the heart. His practice also includes implantation and management of a broad range of cardiac rhythm devices, including conventional and leadless pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), subcutaneous and extravascular defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization devices.

His clinical expertise is complemented by an active role in the advancement of electrophysiology. Dr. Shaik has participated as an investigator in numerous national and international clinical trials evaluating new approaches to cardiac ablation, atrial fibrillation treatment, pacemakers and defibrillators, remote cardiac monitoring, and left atrial appendage closure. His more recent research has included emerging technologies such as pulsed-field ablation, leadless pacing, and novel defibrillator systems. He has authored and co-authored cardiovascular research published in major medical journals and lectures to physicians in the United States, Europe, and Asia on advances in cardiac electrophysiology.

Despite the highly technical nature of his specialty, Dr. Shaik believes that sophisticated medicine must remain understandable to the patient. Patients frequently describe him as thorough and knowledgeable and appreciate his ability to listen carefully and translate complicated heart rhythm problems into language they can understand. His confident, reassuring presence is balanced by kindness and a willingness to take the time necessary to explain a diagnosis, review treatment alternatives, and answer questions.

That combination is particularly important in electrophysiology, where patients may be confronted with unfamiliar terms and difficult choices—whether to continue medication, undergo an ablation, receive a pacemaker or defibrillator, or consider another advanced treatment. Dr. Shaik believes patients should understand both the reason for a recommendation and the alternatives available to them before making those decisions.

Dr. Shaik received his medical degree from Al Ameen Medical College in India. His postgraduate medical training included experience in India and the United Kingdom before he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Philadelphia. He subsequently completed his Cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and advanced fellowship training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Dr. Shaik is board certified in Cardiovascular disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society. He also serves as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and System Chief of Cardiac Electrophysiology at AdventHealth Orlando.

For Dr. Shaik, the rapidly changing field of electrophysiology provides an opportunity to combine scientific innovation with something much more fundamental: helping an individual patient understand what is happening with his or her heart and choosing the treatment most appropriate for their life.
