Johnson P. Massey, MD, FACC

Dr. Johnson Massey is the founding physician of Cardiovascular Associates of Central Florida and has cared for patients in Central Florida for more than four decades. Since establishing the practice 43 years ago, he has helped guide its growth from a small two-physician cardiology practice into one of the region's largest independent cardiovascular groups, while preserving the personal physician-patient relationships on which the practice was built.

Dr. Massey earned his medical degree in 1973 from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan, one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. Following graduation, he served as a commissioned medical officer in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps. He then pursued advanced training in the United States, completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Vernon Hospital, an affiliate of New York Medical College. He went on to complete his fellowship in Cardiology at St. Vincent Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, an affiliate of the Yale School of Medicine.

Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, Dr. Massey has been a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology since 1983. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held numerous leadership positions at hospitals across Central Florida, including serving as the inaugural Chief of Medicine and the first Chief of Cardiology at Osceola Regional Medical Center. He later served as the Chief of Cardiology at the Naval Hospital Orlando and St. Cloud Hospital. 

Few physicians have had the opportunity to witness as much change in cardiovascular medicine as Dr. Massey. During his career, treatments that were once unimaginable have become routine: coronary stents can restore blood flow without open-heart surgery; implantable defibrillators can prevent sudden cardiac death; catheter ablation can successfully treat heart rhythm disorders that were once extremely difficult to control; and transcatheter procedures such as TAVR can replace diseased heart valves without conventional surgery.

Having practiced through these remarkable advances has given Dr. Massey not only a broad perspective on modern cardiology, but also something that comes only with time: the judgment that develops from caring for thousands of patients over many years. He believes that good cardiology is not simply about having access to the newest technology. It is knowing when a test, medication, or procedure is likely to help—and when it may not be necessary.

Today, Dr. Massey focuses on general and preventive cardiology and the long-term management of patients with cardiovascular disease. He evaluates patients with coronary artery disease, hypertension, cholesterol disorders, heart rhythm concerns, valvular heart disease, and other cardiovascular conditions, as well as symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, palpitations, and decreased exercise tolerance. He also maintains an active interest in cardiovascular imaging, interpreting echocardiograms and nuclear cardiology studies, including cardiac PET imaging.

Patients know Dr. Massey for his soft-spoken, deliberate, and conscientious manner. He takes time to listen carefully, consider the whole patient, and explain his recommendations thoughtfully. Many of the relationships he has developed with patients have continued for decades—some spanning much of a patient's adult life. For Dr. Massey, that continuity is one of the most rewarding aspects of practicing medicine.

His role at Cardiovascular Associates has likewise extended well beyond the care of his own patients. As the group's founding physician, Dr. Massey has provided leadership through decades of growth, changes in medical technology, and an increasingly complex healthcare environment. Throughout that evolution, he has remained committed to the principle that sophisticated cardiovascular medicine can be delivered within an independent, physician-led practice where patients are known as individuals, rather than as cogs in a vast healthcare system.

That tradition now extends to another generation. Dr. Massey's son, Dr. Jonathan Massey, followed him into cardiology and joined Cardiovascular Associates as an interventional cardiologist in 2024. For Dr. Massey, having his son return to Central Florida and become part of the practice he helped establish represents a particularly meaningful continuation of a professional commitment that began more than four decades ago
