Patrick Mathias, MD, FACC, FCCP, FACAI, FACP

Dr. Patrick Mathias is an interventional cardiologist whose career has spanned more than four decades of extraordinary change in cardiovascular medicine. During that time, he has developed an unusually broad expertise in the field of cardiology—ranging from coronary artery disease and interventional procedures to heart failure, cardiac rhythm disorders, cardiovascular imaging, critical care, vascular medicine, and preventive cardiology.

That breadth is one of the qualities that distinguishes Dr. Mathias. Colleagues know him for his remarkable depth of cardiovascular knowledge and his ability to approach difficult clinical problems from multiple perspectives. Patients, however, are just as likely to remember something else: his humor, enthusiasm, and ability to establish an easy rapport from the beginning of a visit. He enjoys explaining medicine and believes that patients make better decisions when they understand not only what he recommends, but why.

Dr. Mathias has extensive experience in interventional cardiology and the treatment of coronary artery disease. His training began during an era when coronary angioplasty was still a relatively young field and before today's formal interventional cardiology fellowships had become standard. Following his fellowship in invasive cardiology, he continued to expand his procedural expertise through advanced training, hands-on courses, and collaboration with experienced interventional cardiologists as technologies such as coronary angioplasty, atherectomy, stenting, intravascular imaging, and increasingly sophisticated catheter-based techniques were introduced into clinical practice.

Over the ensuing decades, he has become a highly experienced coronary interventionalist and has earned the respect of colleagues for both his technical skill and his clinical judgment. Yet he has never viewed cardiology solely through the lens of procedures. His unusually broad training allows him to care for patients across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease and to consider medical therapy, prevention, diagnostic imaging, rhythm management, heart failure treatment, and intervention as parts of a single continuum of care.

Dr. Mathias's commitment to learning is reflected in an exceptional range of professional certifications and examinations spanning cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, critical care medicine, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, adult congenital heart disease, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac CT, hypertension, vascular medicine, and other areas of cardiovascular care.

Teaching has also remained an important part of his career. Dr. Mathias serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, for whom he has taught both medical students and physicians in training. In 2021–2022, he received the Osler Award for Outstanding Instruction to Internal Medicine Residents, an honor that reflects the same enthusiasm for explaining medicine that his patients experience in the office.

Dr. Mathias has also participated in cardiovascular clinical research and has contributed to the medical literature on subjects ranging from coronary disease and heart rhythm disorders to heart failure and interventional cardiology. He has served in hospital and medical leadership roles during his career and has remained actively engaged with the evolution of cardiovascular medicine.

His clinical work has also received community recognition. Orlando Magazine named Dr. Mathias one of Orlando's Top Physicians in both 2023 and 2024.

After decades in practice, Dr. Mathias continues to care for a large and remarkably loyal group of patients. His enthusiasm for cardiology has not diminished with time. If anything, his curiosity about the field—and his excitement about what the next generation of cardiovascular advances may offer his patients—remain defining characteristics of his practice.
