Professional Background
Interventional Cardiologist
Dr. Robert Barrett is an experienced interventional cardiologist who has been caring for patients at Cardiovascular Associates of Central Florida for over 35 years. Over that time, he has built a remarkably loyal following, including patients who still continue to travel hours to see him even long after moving away from this area.
Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Barrett still brings a bit of Texas with him to every visit, most notably his familiar drawl, easy confidence, and straightforward manner. Patients often appreciate his warm, old-school approach to medicine: he listens, speaks plainly, takes time to explain what is happening, and develops the kind of long-term physician-patient relationships that have unfortunately become less and less common in modern healthcare.
Clinically, Dr. Barrett has extensive experience in both comprehensive cardiology and interventional cardiology, with particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. He is well versed in advanced catheter-based procedures, including coronary angioplasty, stenting, and atherectomy for patients with significant or complex coronary disease.
Dr. Barrett brings decades of experience and seasoned judgment to cardiovascular decision-making. He believes that the best treatment begins with understanding the individual patient, followed by a thoughtful discussion of the available options. Whether evaluating a new cardiovascular concern, managing established heart disease, or determining whether an intervention is appropriate, his goal is to recommend the course of care that best fits the patient's condition and circumstances.
A graduate of Tulane University, Dr. Barrett remained at Tulane for medical school, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and subsequently trained in Cardiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His cardiology training included an additional year of research involving mechanical circulatory support and cardiac positron emission tomography (PET), giving him experience in both advanced cardiovascular treatment and advanced cardiac imaging.
Dr. Barrett has also played an important leadership role in acute cardiac care. He has served in the past as Chief of Cardiology at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital and as Chairman of the Code STEMI program, helping oversee the coordinated emergency response for patients experiencing acute heart attacks.
Despite his extensive interventional experience, Dr. Barrett believes that performing a procedure is only one part of caring for a patient with heart disease. He emphasizes prevention, careful diagnostic evaluation, medical therapy, and long-term follow-up, reserving intervention for patients who are most likely to benefit. As such, for many of his patients, what distinguishes Dr. Barrett most is not a credential or procedure, but the relationship they have built with him over the years. His combination of experience, candor, warmth, and commitment to continuity of care has earned the trust of generations of patients and families in Central Florida.
